University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Information
The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee is also known as UWM, UW–Milwaukee or Milwaukee. It is a coed public research university that is based in the city of Wisconsin in the United States. It is known as the Milwaukee metropolitan area’s largest university and the state’s second largest university next to UW-Madison (LINK). It is a member of the University of Wisconsin System and one of the two doctoral degree granting public universities in the state.
The university’s current total number of enrolled students is 30,502 and it has 1,623 faculty members. Located at the upper East Side near Lake Michigan, the university is home to the only graduate school of freshwater science in America.
It is composed of 70 academic centers, laboratory and institute facilities and has 14 schools and colleges. It offers 94 bachelor’s degree programs, 53 masters and 32 doctorate degrees for a total of 180 overall degree programs. It is classified as an RU/H Research University in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The institution had about 68 million US Dollars in expenditures in the year 2010 alone and ranked 89th among US research universities.
The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee was built with a belief that the city has a great need for a public university in order to become a great city. The Wisconsin state legislature passed a bill in 1955 that created a large public university thatl offered graduate programs in the largest city of Wisconsin. In 1956, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee was established as a result of the combined University of Wisconsin's Milwaukee extension and the Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee (WSCM).
Some of the university’s notable alumni include Golda Meir, a teacher, kibbutznik and politician who became the fourth Prime Minister of the State of Israel; Alberto Fujimori, served as President of Peru; Larry N. Vanderhoef, an American biochemist, and academic and the 5th chancellor of University of California, Davis; Frank Caliendo, an American comedian and impressionist; Alan Kulwicki, an American NASCAR Winston Cup Series winner; and Jim Rygiel, a visual effects supervisor.
