University of Virginia Information

Situated in Charlottesville, the university of virginia was established in 1819 under a decree from Thomas Jefferson. He wanted virginia to have a university that was liberal in it's thinking and broad in its subject range. Today the university offers 48 types of degrees at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level there is an even broader range of choice, with 55 doctoral degrees and 95 masters degrees on offer.

The university has eleven main schools and colleges; these cover the following fields:

Architecture; Arts and Sciences; Business; Commerce; Continuing education; Education; Engineering and Applied Science; Law; Medicine; Nursing; and leadership and Public Policy.

As a long established and prestigious institution the university of virginia has many famous alumni and faculty associated with it; these include Thomas Jefferson, who took an active role in the establishment of the institution, the poet Edgar Allen Poe, and the painter Georgia O'Keeffe, the biologist Francis Collins, and the manchester city player Claudio Reyna. Other names of note include many famous politicians, such as the Kennedy family and Woodrow Wilson.
