University of Texas Dallas Information

The University of Texas at Dallas (commonly known as UTD or UT Dallas) is a state university in Texas, United States. It belongs to the University of Texas System and is known for its engineering, computer science, natural science, mathematics, MBA and cognitive science programmes. It is also known for admitting freshmen whose SAT score are among the highest in Texas and also among the country’s top 20 for public universities. Its MBA programme is ranked among the 50 best in the nation.

UTD started as a research branch of Texas Instruments, a corporation established before the Second World War to track enemy planes and submarines. It was originally called the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies. At the time, it recruited some of the country’s best scientific talents. Texas Instruments later donated it to the University of Texas System and on 13 June 1969, the governor signed the bill which created the University of Texas at Dallas. UTD was mandated by law to confer graduate degrees only. It did so until 1975 when it started to admit upper-division undergraduate students. The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science was established in1986; it currently has the largest number on undergraduates enrolled. In 1990, by virtue of a legislative decree, it was allowed to admit freshmen and sophomores.

UTD offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes through its seven schools: School of Arts and Humanities; School of Behavioural and Brain Sciences; School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences; Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science; School of Interdisciplinary Studies; School of Management; and School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science has a programme called Industrial Practice Programmes (IPP) which gives students an internship/co-op programme. The programme allows employers to send out requests for internship/co-op. IPP then selects the students whose skill sets match the employers’ specifications. Another special programme is the UTeach Dallas which is under the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It is a teacher development programme dedicated to math, science and computer teaching.

Some of University’s notable alumni include Jerry A. Madden of the Texas House of Representatives; Sam Gilliland, chairman, director and CEO of the Sabre Holdings Corporation and the CEO of Travelocity; Alan Halliburton, president of Halliburton Investor Relations; and many others.
