UTAS was established after the closure of overseas scholarships provided funds in 1890. Its first campus was the Queen’s Domain in Hobart and Richard Deodatus Poulett Harris became the university’s first warden of the senate as he had been a long advocate of the establishment of the university. During the First World War, the institution had over 100 students and numerous Tasmanian graduates were influential in both politics and law.
The University of Tasmania has three main campuses
- Northern campus. Located at the suburb of Newnham, around 10 minutes from the center of Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city. The Australian Maritime College is based on the Newnham campus.
- Southern campus. About 10 minutes away from the Hobard CBD, the southern campus covers a 100-hectare site in Sandy Bay that overlooks the estuary of the River Derwent and has the majestic Mount Wellington as its backdrop.
- Vibrant Cradle Coast campus. Located in Burnie that caters for students and academics in the north-western part of the state. In 2008, this campus underwent a significant expansion and became the University’s state-of the-art Rural Clinical School in Burnie.
