University of Southampton Information

Although only granted the right to grant degrees in 1952 the university of Southampton can trace its roots back to 1862 when Henry Hartley bequested money to form the Hartley Institution for the study of nature and science. Nowadays the university has grown to become one of the leading universities in England with a student body of nearly 25,000. It is currently guided by the Chancellor John Parker.

The university of Southampton offers tuition in a diverse range of subjects, which are covered by three main Faculties; these being the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Mathematics; Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences; and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. These faculties are sub-divided into schools, including those involved in the study of Ocean and Earth Science; Chemistry; Geography; Law; Art; Medicine; and biology (amongst others).

Some of the notable faculty and alumni who have been associated with the University of Southampton over the years include the runner Roger Black, the writer Stephen Baxter, the journalists John Inverdale, Louisa Pilbeam, and tv presenters Liz Barker and Chris Packham.
