University of Science and Technology China Information

The University of Science and Technology of China, commonly abbreviated USTC, is a national university in China known for its excellence in research. It is regarded to be among China’s most prestigious universities and the youngest among the 16 top national key universities.

University of Science and Technology of China was founded in September of 1958 by the Chinese academy of sciences. In the early 1970s, during the Cultural Revolution, the University was transferred to the capital city of the Anhui province, Hefei. In 1978, USTC established the first graduate school in China. The University has become a leader in science and technology, social economy and education in China since the 1990s. The government approved USTC to be included into the first group of universities to receive construction support in the “Project 211” and the five year plan. USTC has implemented its “Project 211” since 2002.

USTC offers a wide array of programmes through its 15 faculties: Department of Mathematics, School of the Gifted Young, School of Physical Sciences, School of Life Sciences, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, School of Information Science & Technology, School of Engineering Science, School of Earth and Space Sciences, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Management, School of Software Engineering, School of Nuclear Science and Technology, School of Humanities & Social Science, School of Continued Education, and Introduction to the School of Distance Learning.

Some of the University’s most notable alumni, or USCTers, include Xiao-gang Wen, a Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics in MIT; Peidong Yang, professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley; Yuanqing Yang, former CEO and chairman of the board of the Lenovo Group; Ruimin Zhang, CEO of the Haier Group; and many others.
