Saarland University was the first institution founded after World War II. It was established in November 1948 with the provision of the French Government and with the support of the University of Nancy. The university had its European perspective since the beginning due to the combination of the French and German educational traditions as well as the dual languages of the given instructions. Before the university of Saarland was founded, clinical training courses for medical students at the state hospital in Homburg, Saarland, were introduced in early 1946 and on 8 May 1947, the "Centre Universitaire d'Etudes Supérieures de Hombourg" was established under the patronage of the University of Nancy.
The University of Saarland is now offering Bachelor and Master programmes of study in addition to the older and more traditional Diplom. The institution is entitled to confer PH.D. Degrees from all of the eight faculties and also confers honorary titles. Saarland University is liable for conducting related courses of Computer Science for students who are enrolled in the graduate courses of the MPI for Computer Science as well as MPI for Software Systems. It is included in the limited number of universities in Germany that are teaching the entire master’s program of Computer Science in English.
Both the graduate and undergraduate students from across the world find the Saarbrücken’s computer science environment a stimulating one. The wide range of research areas—from artificial intelligence to computer graphics to software system—is being reflected upon the offered rich courses.
