University of Rostock Information
The University of Rostock, (Universität Rostock), is located in the city of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is the largest institution in the northern Europe continent and in the Baltic Sea area. The university is the third oldest institution in Germany that is in continuous operation. The other oldest universities in the country include Heidelberg (1386), Cologne (1388), Erfurt (1392/1994), Würzburg (1402/1582) and Leipzig (1409).
The University of Rostock was established upon confirmation of Pope Martin V and saw about 400 to 500 students every year throughout the 15th century, which was already a large number of students at that time. Since Rostock was included in the largest and top universities in Northern Germany, many of its students came from Scandinavia, Holland and other states that are bordering the Baltic Sea.
In 1437, the university moved to Greifswald due to the course of pressure from the church and political struggles, and it remained there until 1443. Teaching took place in Lübeck from 1487 to 1488.
Tradition and innovation had become the trademark of the university and today, it has nearly 15,000 students and 2,200 employees. The University of Rostock offers a huge array of perspectives into many different scientific fields.
