The University of Rhode Island (URI) is the main public university in Rhode Island, United States. Its largest campus is in South Kingston’s Kingston area. Its 3 other campuses are the Feinstein Campus in Providence; the W. Alton Jones Campus, located in West Greenwich; and the Narragansett Bay Campus which is located in Narragansett. URI is an urban grant, land grant and sea grant institution and it has several recognised schools and colleges.

URI received its first charter in 1888 as the main agricultural school for the state of Rhode Island. The school was renamed to the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1892. It expanded its programmes beyond the agricultural mandate it had when it first operated. The College of Arts and Sciences was added and it started to offer doctoral degrees.

URI offers more than 100 courses through its major academic units: University College, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, College of Human Science and Services, College of Environmental and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Continuing Education, College of Business Administration, College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate School of Oceanography.
