The second oldest university in Italy (the university of Bologna is the oldest), the University of Padua is currently presided over by the rector Vincenzo Milanesi. Being one of the oldest universities in Europe has enabled the university to have some notable firsts, including the first ever woman to graduate university (Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia in 1678).
The University of Padua is split into 13 main faculties; these offer study in the following areas: Agriculture; Arts and Philosophy; Economics; Education; Engineering; Law; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Science; Medicine and Surgery; Pharmacy; Political Science; Psychology; Statistical Science; and Veterinary Medicine.
Being such an old and prestigious university, Padua has been associated with many famous and influential faculty and alumni over the years including the science greats Galileo Galilei, Nicolaus Copernicus; the worlds greatest lover Giacomo Casanova; philosophers Pietro Pomponazzi, Cesare Cremonini and Ermolao Barbaro. Other great names associated with the university of Padua include poets Pietro Bembo and Torquato Tasso; and Moses Hayyim Luzzatto, Gabriele Falloppio and Sir Francis Walsingham.
