University of Notre Dame
Motto: Vita, Dulcedo, Spes: (Mary, our) life, sweetness, and hope
There are actually a number of places with the name Notre Dame in the world, but the university associated with the name is located within the state of Indiana in the United States of America. It is a Catholic school that is both private and coeducational, although the latter has only been true since the 1970s. It is not a particularly large school with about 12,000 students in attendance, but nevertheless they have a large endowment of $5.5 billion. They are perhaps most famous for their team name of the Fighting Irish and the notable green jackets that abound.
According to the University of Notre Dame website, the admissions process at the University is a very competitive one, intended to weed out students that under perform. The university states that it gets five applicants for every position they have available in the freshman class of that year and also that almost seven out of every ten students applying end up coming from the top five percent of the graduating class of their secondary school. Another noted factor in the demographics of the University of Notre Dame is that both the female and minority populations at the university have increased greatly since coeducational instruction was adopted in 1972.
Academic structure of the University of Notre Dame
As far as academics go, the basis for the educational system at the University of Notre Dame is centered on four different colleges that are responsible for classes related to the arts, science, engineering and business. The bulk of the students belong to one of these four colleges, although there are schools outside of the college system for architecture and law. All of the programs are very competitive and that nature has served to create students that tend to do very well once they have completed their undergraduate studies. Notre Dame in fact has the highest number of undergraduates that go on to get graduate or professional degrees in different fields for a Catholic school. Considering the number of Catholic schools in the United States, that is some achievement.
