University Nebraska Medical Center Information
UNMC, as the University of Nebraska Medical Center is known, is the only health sciences centre in the state of Nebraska, United States. It primarily educates Nebraskan citizens but also has population of non-Nebraskans and non-Americans. Four of the University’s programs or colleges were among the best Graduate Schools in America in 2009, as ranked by the US News and World Report. The College of Medicine, in particular, was listed in the top 20.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center was founded as a private medical college in the city of Omaha in the year 1880. It was renamed the following year to Omaha Medical College. In 1902 it became one of the constituents of the University of Nebraska. In 1917, a university hospital was opened. The University of Nebraska made the decission to bring all its health sciences under just one umbrella in 1968, thereby forming the UNMC. The hospital at UNMC merged with with the Clarkson Hospital in 1997 which was later called the Nebraska Medical Center.
The College of Public Health was added in January 2007. Its purpose was to address issues in Nebraska concerning diseases, health promotion, health care delivery, biosecurity and biopreparedness, and environmental health and safety. Scheduled to open 2010 is the Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health which will be the venue for the college.
Almost half of the health professionals in Nebraska have graduated from UNMC. The Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education was opened by the university in 2008. It replaced obsolete facilities and had technologically equipped classrooms and laboratories. It also included a campus events centre, amphitheaters, interaction rooms, and clinical simulation rooms.
Other structures expected to open in 2010 or 2011 are the Center for College of Nursing Sciences and the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging.
UNMC has five colleges—Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health—and school—School of Allied Health Professions.
