University Naples Federico II Information
With a student body of over 100,000 and having been established at the start of the 13th century the University Naples Federico II is both one of the largest and one of the oldest universities in the world. Known in Italian as the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, the establishment has been home to many of Italy's (and Europe's) leading scholars over the years.
Today the university is split into thirteen different departments, these cover education in the following broad areas: Agriculture, Architecture, Biotechnology, Economics, Engineering, Law, Letters, Mathematics, Medicine, Pharmacy, Philosophy, Physics, Politics, Science, Sociology, Surgery, Veterinary Medicine.
Being a long established and re known educational establishment has enabled the University of Naples Federico II to gain an enviable list of former faculty and alumni; the list even includes some saints! Some of the worlds greatest philosophers such as Fulvio Tessitore, Antonio Labriola, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Nicola Abbagnano, and Saint Alphonsus Liguori studied at Naples. Other names of note include the mathematician Renato Caccioppoli; the physicist Ettore Majorana; and politicians Giorgio Napolitano and Francesco De Martino.
