National Autonomous University Mexico Information

The oldest and by far the largest university in Northern America the National Autonomous University of Mexico was given the go ahead by Charles I of Spain, who signed a Royal Decree in 1551. Nowadays the university has grown to be one of the most prestigious in the spanish speaking world and its running's are overseen by president José Narro Robles. The main campus is situated at Ciudad Universitaria in the south of Mexico city, the buildings have such an historical influence that they have been given UNESCO World Heritage status.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico has 21 major faculties and schools enabling it to offer a very wide choice of subjects for study. The main areas covered by the faculty are:

Accounting and Administration;Architecture; Arts; Chemistry; Economics; Engineering; Higher Studies (Acatlán; Cuautitlán; Iztacala; Zaragoza); Law; Medicine; Music; Nursery and Obstetric; Odontology; Philosophy and Literature; Political and Social Sciences; Psychology; Sciences; Social Work; and Veterinarian Medicine.

Being one of the most prestigious spanish speaking establishments in the world has enabled the National Autonomous University of Mexico to acquire an enviable list of alumni and faculty including three nobel prize winners: Mario Molina (Chemistry); Octavio Paz (Literature); and Alfonso García Robles (Peace). Other influential people associated with the university include five presidents of Mexico (Carlos Salinas de Gortari; Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado; José López Portillo y Pacheco; José López Portillo y Pacheco; Miguel Alemán Valdés), writers such as Alfonso Reyes, Fernando del Paso and Salvador Elizondo, and the scientists Luis E. Miramontes, Miguel Alcubierre, Antonio Lazcano and Salvador Zubirán.
