University of Mississippi Information
The University of Mississippi, or Ole Miss as it is popularly called, is a coeducational research university whose main campus is in Oxford, Mississippi, United States. It has three other branch campuses in Southaven, Tupelo and Booneville. It also runs the space-grant and sea-grant institution, Mississippi Field Station located in Abbeville.
The Ole Miss was founded in 1848. One of its first buildings is the Lyceum which, on the University’s first year, housed all of the faculty offices and student classrooms. The University’s nickname “Ole Miss” was taken from a contest for naming the University yearbook in 1897. Students were asked to submit names for the yearbook; the winning name was “Ole Miss” which was submitted by Elma Meek. The name was used for the yearbook and has since then also become the University’s nickname.
During the Civil War, the School of Medicine was used as a hospital by both the Confederate and Union soldiers. The site of the old medical building is now the site of the new Chemistry building. Two of the most notable events that took place in the University’s were the Ole Miss riot of 1962 and the Presidential Debate in 2008.
