Maastricht University Information
Maastricht University was founded in 1976 and is a public university located in the Netherlands. The university is considered as the youngest in the Netherlands and has the official abbreviation of UM. When it was founded it was originally named as Rijksuniversiteit Limburg, but changed it’s name in 1996 to Universiteit Maastricht. The university was partially established to become the eight public medical schools in the Netherlands and in 2008, claimed that its name, Maastricht University would emphasize its international character.

UM offers an extensive array of academic programme choices, all of which are designed to bring out the best in it’s students. With over 14,500 students and 3,500 staff, the university is considered to be the most international university in the Netherlands and stands out due to its advanced approach to learning and international outlook.
Maastricht University has been leading expertise in the field of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for over 35 years. PBL is not just mere acquisition of knowledge but rather a means of exchanging knowledge in a more effective and challenging way. The university is offering unique international-oriented and Europe-based programmes as it live up to it’s saying, “Leading is Learning.”
The university carries out research in multidisciplinary teams and has close cooperations with global industries, businesses and institutes. The high quality research carried out at the establishment attracts worldwide attention and takes the lead in numerous large European research projects. The work of the university does not stop there—it continues to attract both international and national top researchers with the use of their founded research portfolio.
Maastricht University is composed of 45% international students and 30% teaching staff that comefrom overaseas. UM had received various awards and is included in the top rankings of worldwide universities. Elsevier, a Dutch magazine, had ranked the university as the best institution for bachelor’s programmes in the country in the areas of Fiscal Economics, Econometrics, International Business, Operations research and Medicine in 2010.
For the World University Rankings, Maastricht University ranked 111, creating a giant leap as it rises from 172nd position in 2006. The offered Medicine programme was included in the European’s top 20 institutions in the field of clinical medicine ranking. The International Business master’s programme is ranked as one of the top 25 world business programs, as published by the Financial Times.
