University Liège Information

The university of Liege can trace its root back to the beginning of the 19th century when it was founded upon a decree by William I, however education in the Liege area can trace its roots back much further, with theology and philosophy being studied in the area as early as the 11th century, indeed the area was seen as such a centre of excellence at the time, and it attracted such great scholars that is was though of as being the 'new Athens'.

Nowadays the University of Liège has grown in size of both student body and topic area, and most of the topics are taught in French. L has seven major faculties and three schools, these are split into 45 different departments, and offer learning across a diverse range of subjects:

Over the years many people have walked the halls of the University of Liège, these include the nobel prize winner Albert Claude (Physiology or Medicine), biologists Theodor Schwann, Jean-Christophe Marine, Edouard Van Beneden and Zénon-M. Bacq, writers André Henri Constant van Hasselt and the philosophers Paul Gochet and Marcel Detienne.
