University of Halle Wittenberg Information
The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) was created in it present form in 1817 when two older universities (Halle and Wittenberg) were merged together. This enables the university to trace its roots back to the very start of the 16th century. The university is mainly located in the German city of Halle. Today the university has grown to cater nearly nineteen thousand students and is governed by the rector Wulf Diepenbrock.
The Martin Luther University has nine different faculties: Three of these cover the natural sciences, three cover the study of philosophy; the other three are dedicated to the fields of Theology; Medicine; Law and Economics respectively.
As the Halle Wittenberg university can trace its roots back over 500 years and has long been seen as a prestigious university in Europe it can associate itself with many famous scholars and faculty including the Nobel prize winners Hermann Staudinger, Karl Ziegler and Gustav Ludwig Hertz. Some of the hundreds of others of note include Otto Ferdinand von Abensberg und Traun, Erich Gutenberg, Martin Luther, and Christian Wolff.
