The university of Genoa is very old; it was officially created in 1471, but can can trace its roots back to as early as the 13th century, when many of the colleges in Genova that formed the university were independent degree granting colleges (specialising in Law and Theology). The university has grown immensely in size over the years and now offers education to around 40,000 students; this makes it one of the largest universities in Europe. Today the university at Genova is governed by the rector Gaetano Bignardi.
