University of Fribourg Information
The university of Fribourg is a public university located in Fribourg, Switzerland. Established in 1582, it is headed by rector, Professor Guido Vergauen, and is one of the largest universities in Switzerland in terms of student population. The university was first established in 1582 under the name Collège Saint-Michel by the Jesuit Peter Canisius. The university's establishment answered the need for more Catholic institutions of higher learning during a time when Protestantism was widespread. It wasn't until 1889 that the university became known as the University of Fribourg with the approval of the The Grand Council of the Canton in Fribourg. Part of the agreement with the Council was that the Dominicans were left in charge of the theological faculty. In 1939, the university decided to move to a new location because of overcrowding and the new grounds were built on an old Misericorde cemetery. The university played a big role during World War II when it set up camps together with the University of Zurich and educated prisoners of war from Poland. The university is made up of several campuses: Misericorde, Perolles, Perolles 2, Regina Mundi, BCU centrale, Pierre Aeby, Bonnesfontaines, and Stade St. Leonard. Though the university has no main campus, most of its administrative buildings are housed at Misericorde. It has five faculties namely the faculties of Theology, Law, Social Sciences, Letters and Science, which are further sub-divided into departments. The university also has departments which fall under two faculties, such as its department of Environmental Science and department of Computer Science, which falls under both the Social Sciences and Science faculties. The university also has several institutes and centers, like the Institute of Sport, Language Center, Institute for Ethics and Human Rights, Centre for European Studies and Center of excellence in ethics among others. There are also several Master's degrees offered at the university in the fields of European Business, Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Geography and Biology. The university also conducts scholarly research around the domains of Theology, Natural Sciences, Law, Maths, Humanities, Economics and Social Sciences. Most of the university's scholarly endeavors have revolved around topics regarding Nanoscience, Environmental Sciences, Ethics, Human Rights, European Studies, Multilingualism, Raising Competitiveness and Informatics.
