University of Ferrara Information

The state-supported University of Ferrara, is locally known as Università degli Studi di Ferrara, and is one of the oldest Italian universities.. Alberto V, Marquis of Este, with Pope Boniface IX’s permission, founded the university on 4 March 1391. The University’s Studium General was created on 18 October1391. Courses offered at that time were in theology, law and arts.

After Italy’s unification, the University of Ferrara became a free university. It had faculties of Law and Mathematics, a three-year course in Medicine, and Schools of Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and public Notaries. Prior to World War I, it had the most number of students of all the free universities of Italy. After the Second World War, the University started to become state-supported, which allowed the establishment of research departments and many other faculties.

The University of Ferrara has eight faculties: Pharmacy; Medicine and Surgery; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences; Law; Humanities; Engineering; Economics; and Architecture. There is also an Institute for Advanced Studies which offers 16 PhD courses. The research departments are not one with the faculties like most other universities in Italy. There are independent institutes for philosophy, history and literature. Also, geologists, physicists, and biologists work in institutions independent of one another. Researches in medicine are carried out together with the city’s main hospital, which allows the university to use some of its buildings for teaching.

The Directory Committee for the Evaluation of Research, abbreviated to CIVR, recognised the University of Ferrara as number one in the field of applied research in Italy. Since the year 2000 university of Ferrara has collaborated with Chinese industrial areas, universities and local businesses in various researches and experiments across the faculties of medicine, architecture, engineering, jurisprudence and economics.

Some of the University’s famous alumni include Nicolaus Copernicus, Amato Lusitano, Massimo Pigliucci, William Latimer, Paracelsus, Ludovico Ariosto, and Girolamo Savonarola, among others.
