University of Essex Information

The University of Essex is a public British university made up of three campuses: Colchester Campus (main campus), East 15, Loughton Campus, and Southend Campus. The university is reknown as a centre of excellence in the humanities and social sciences field. It ranks high in the United Kingdom as well as the world in the disciplines of economic, history, politics, philosophy, and sociology. It is also known for its strength in psychology, electronic engineering, and biological sciences.

The conception of the university started in July 1959 with the Essex County Council accepting Alderman Charles Leatherland’s proposal to establish a university in the county. Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Sir John Ruggles-Brise chaired a University Promotion Committee, which formally requested the establishment of a University of Essex from the University Grants Committee. Initially, the Promotion Committee suggested that the site of the university be at Hylands Park in Chelmsford. In May 1961, however, it was announced in the House of Commons that the preferred location for the new university was Wivenhoe. Wivenhoe Park was chosen and acquired in the same of that year. Construction began in 1963 and the first official classes started in 1964. In 1965, the University was given a Royal Charter.

The University has 18 schools and departments which comprise its four faculties. Courses span the fields of Science and Engineering, Social Sciences, Law and Management, and the Humanities. Some of its well-known departments include the departments of Language and Linguistics, Sociology, Government, and Economics. There are also several research facilities which have received high ratings from the UK government. Some of its well-known research institutes include the Institute for Social and Technical Research, the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents, and the Institute for Social and Economic Research, among others.

The university has produced graduates who have excelled in the fields of Social Science, Technology and Arts, and Politics. It also has one Nobel Prize-winning alumnus to its credit. Oscar Arias, the current Costa Rican president and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, completed his PhD in Political Science from the university. The Costa Rican vice-president, Roberto Casas Zamora, also studied in the university. Other notable graduates include Slovenian foreign minister Dimitrij Rupel, Documentary Film-maker Nick Broomfield, novelist Jonathan Wilson, and Professor Michael Taylor, among others.
