Durham University Information
Although the university of Durham was officially founded by the government in 1832 it can trace its roots back much further, and lays claim top be the third oldest university in England. The reason that it was not until the early 19th century that Durham could officially become a university was due to a decree by Oxford and Cambridge, who were concerned that their reputation as the centres of learning in England could be challenged.
Like Oxford, Cambridge and York, Durham University is a collegiate university and is proud of its traditions; there are 16 colleges in all, the oldest of which is University College. Although the chancellor of the university of Durham is the writer Bill Bryson, this is more of an honorable role; the person who takes daily charge of the university is the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chris Higgins.
Durham university has three main faculties that offer study across many topics including biology, Archaeology, business, education, geography, arts, English, history, music, geology, physics and chemistry (amongst many others).
The faculties are as follows:
Faculty of Arts & Humanities
Faculty of Social Science & Health
Faculty of Science
As a long established and elite university Durham has seen many a famous name walk through its gates; some of the notable alumni include the actor Sir Roger Moore; sports stars Andrew Strauss, Jonathan Edwards, Will Carling and Nasser Hussain; and the TV presenters Jeremy Vine and Kate Silverton.
