University of Central Florida Information

The metropolitan-public University of Central Florida, commonly known as UCF, is one of the member institutions of the State University System of Florida. It is the state’s largest university by area and the third-largest in the US by enrollment. Its main campus is located in Orlando, with satellite campuses in Clermont, Cocoa, Heathrow, Daytona Beach, Kissimmee, Ocala, Sanford, and Palm Bay.

UCF was founded on 10 June 1963 with the passing of the Florida State Legislature and the signing of the Bill No. 125 by then governor, Farris Bryant. In 1965, Charles Milican was appointed by the Board of Regents as the new university’s president. Milican named the school Florida Technological University and co-designed its Pegasus seal.

The University’s site was originally a desolate farm. In 1967, Governor Claude Kirk headed the groundbreaking of the new university. On 7 October of the next year, classes started with 1,948 students at the library, the school’s first academic building. There were five colleges (Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, and Business Administration) offering 55 degree programs.

UCF has 12 colleges offering 97 bachelor’s degree programmes, 95 master’s programmes, 29 doctorate programmes, one professional programme (Medicine), and three specialist programmes. The colleges include Burnett Honours College, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Health and Public Affairs, College of Nursing, College of Medicine, Rosen College of Hospitality Management, College of Sciences, College of Optics and Photonics, and College of Graduate Studies.

UCF is known as a research university and is a member of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. It fosters research among its colleges and partner corporations–Siemens, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. It also has a satellite campus in Cape Canaveral, at the Kennedy Space Centre. Notable researches in the university are in the fields of modeling and simulation, optics, engineering and computer science, digital media, education, hospitality management, and business administration.

The University of Central Florida has awarded more than 192,000 degrees in its history. Some of its notable students include a Florida State Senator, eight Florida House of Representatives members, and two NASA astronauts, among others. Some graduates have served as the heads of several major institutions like Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Orlando Magic, NASCAR, Texas Rangers, and many others.
