University of Canterbury Information
The University of Canterbury is a public university in New Zealand. It is the second oldest in the country and is known for its strong cultural heritage and traditions. Its main campus is located in Ilam, a suburb in the city of Christchurch. Its other campuses in Timaru, Tauranga and Nelson are all under the College of Education. The university also has teaching centres in Timaru, Rotorua, New Plymouth and Greymouth.
The University was founded as Canterbury College in 1873 through the efforts of Christ’s College and Canterbury Museum and Library. It became the University of New Zealand’s first constituent college and the country’s second institution to offer education in the tertiary level. It was also the fourth in the Australasian region. The Canterbury College changed its name to Canterbury University College in 1933. It started to use its current name, University of Canterbury, in 1957.
The University was a constituent of the University of New Zealand (UNZ) until 1961, when the federal system (UNZ) was dissolved. That year, the University of Canterbury became independent and was allowed to award its own degrees. With the dissolution of the UNZ, the University adopted the Canterbury Agricultural College as a constituent college and changed its named to Lincoln College. In 1990, the College also became an independent university.
The University and the Christchurch College of Education worked closely for many years, which lead them to fully merge in 2007.
The University of Canterbury offers its degrees through five colleges and a school, the School of Law. It colleges are the College of Education, College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Business and Economics and College of Arts. It also has several research centres including the Centre for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), the Centre for Integrated Research in Biosafety (INBI) and the Centre of Excellence in Aquaculture and Marine Ecology, among others.
Some of the University’s notable alumni include Alexander Bickerton, the teacher of famous scientist Ernest Rutherford; Roy Kerr, a mathematician who solved some of Albert Einstein’s equations; Rosemary Banks, the ambassador to the United States; philosopher Jack Copeland; and many others.
