University of Athens Information
The full name of the University of Athens is the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It is located in the capital city of Greece and was established in 1837. Today it has grown into a very large university and attracts over fifty thousand students at the undergraduate level; the university of Athens is currently looked after by the Rector Christos Kittas.
Unlike most universities in the English speaking world, the university of Athens is not divided into faculties and then schools, but the other way around ie. the school of philosophy is made up of eleven different faculties such as those associated with the learning of history, music and English. In all there are five major schools at the university:
Schools of Health Sciences
School of Law, Economics and Political Sciences
School of Philosophy
School of Sciences
School of Theology
In addition to these there are many faculties that are independent as they do not fit to well into the major schools, these faculties include faculties of education and of communication.
Being the second largest university in Greece (Saloniki is the largest) has enabled the university of Athens to build up an enviable list of alumni these include names such as Theo Angelopoulos, Georgios Papanikolaou and Andreas Papandreou.
