The Université aix marseille came about as a result of the merging of the Marseille's schools of science and humanities in 1969. The institution has grown to include around 23 thousand students, with around 15% of these being from overseas.
The Université aix marseille currently has 27 departments catering largely to the humanities and sciences. These are spread across nine research and training units; and ten schools and institutes. Some of the major areas of study include biology, chemistry, physics, philosophy, Music and Maths. The univ provence is particularly strong in languages and offers study in Korean, Romanian, Portuguese, Italian, Slavic related languages, Arabic related languages, English and German.
Some of the renown alumni of Aix Marseille university of Provence include the Iranian film makers Kiarash Anvari and Sadaf Foroughi; and the french author J.M.G. Le Clézio, who won the 2008 Nobel prize for literature.
