Universite Catholique de Louvain
Motto: Sedes Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom, Seat of Knowledge)
The Universite Catholique de Louvain is usually known as the UCL, both domestically and internationally. It is the largest French-speaking University within the country of Belgium and is a private catholic institution with an endowment of 360 million Euros. Despite being a private institution, the UCL actually has a rather impressive attendance figure, which currently posts the student body at somewhere in the 23,000 range.
The roots of the Universite Catholique de Louvain actually date back to the end of the Middle Ages. The UCL was actually founded in the year 1425 and since then has been a force in the academic community. Their self-described goal lies in expanding the frontiers of human knowledge and then using that knowledge to increase the humanity of the human race.
Universite Catholique de Louvain: A forward looking institution
One of the things that the Universite Catholique de Louvain appears to do well is plan for the future. When you take a look at all of the different plans that the UCL has put into place, you are going to find a university that is very forward looking. The investments in technologies, in alternate methods of teaching and in research will have immediate implications. With many breakthroughs each year the UCL plans to make the future a more scientific and more interesting place to be.
This is of course something that rubs off on students that are applying to the facility in order to either go through a science, social science or humanities degree program with students being exposed to research at a very early level. The idea behind the UCL is to get these students vested and interested in improving not only their own futures, but also the futures of the people around them and humanity in general. The best way to do this is always through practice and application of knowledge and this is why so much of what is taught at Universite Catholique de Louvain is immediately pertinent for the student to see.
