Tokyo Medical and Dental University (not to be confused with Tokyo Medical University or Tokyo Dental University) is a public university with the main campus located in Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1928, the University receives its accreditation from Japan University Accreditation Association and is a part of Japan’s national university system. It is claimed to be one of the leading educational and research institutions in Japan, providing top class academic preparation in the medical and dental fields.
Faculties at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University
Tokyo Medical and Dental University consists of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Apart from baccalaureate, it offers graduate degrees in the fields related to medicine and dentistry, which include Medico-Dental Sciences, Oral Health Sciences, Cognitive and Behavioral Medicine, Public Health, and Comprehensive Health Nursing Sciences among many others. Its graduate schools include Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry, Graduate School of Health Sciences and Biomedical Science PhD Program (School of Biomedical Science).
Among average 3,000 students of Tokyo Medical and Dental University there are about 250 international students from Thailand, China, Bangladesh and over 40 other countries, and this number is expanding every year. The University encourages foreign students to enroll into its academic and research programs with the help of the International Exchange Committee. As a part of foreign student support, it provides scholarships (Kobara Shoichi Scholarship for medical students and Tamanyu Mii Scholarship for dental students) and offers special programs for international students.
Student Activities at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University
The University supports a wide range of student activities. 44 student clubs and organizations provide opportunities for socializing and participating in a variety of events. A major part of many international as well as in-school activities is provided by Students’ Society of International Activities (SSIA). It supports MADEP (Medical And Dental students Exchange Program) and annual congress held by APDSA (Asian Pacific Dental Students’ Association) among other international activities.
The University has extensive research facilities with two major research institutions (Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering, and Medical Research Institute) being at the top of the list. Additionally, there is Center for Education Research in Medicine and Dentistry, Bioethics Research Center and Research Center for Frontier Life Sciences. There are also two libraries with the total number of volumes nearing 325,000. Both Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry have university hospitals.
