Saint Petersburg State University Information

The Saint Petersburg State University is a public university owned by the Russian federal state. It was commonly recognized as the Leningrad State University in the Soviet period. The present times considered it as one of the biggest, most ancient, and one of the most high-status academic institutions in the state.

Considered in Russia to be the second greatest university in the land, trailing behind only Moscow State University, it is placed in the 2009 Global University Rankings as the 84th best university in the world. In 2007, it was ranked 239th by the Times World University Rankings. It was also positioned within the 305th-402nd in the 2007 Academic Ranking of World Universities, and by Wuhan University’s Rankings as the 421st finest academic institution worldwide. It owns two campuses, one located on Vasilievsky Island and another one in Peterhof.

The university was under dispute as being the oldest in Russia. It was pitted against Moscow State University, the university in Moscow being founded in 1755 and the one at Saint Petersburg as late as 1819; however Saint Petersburg can trace its roots back as far as 1724 when it was an acadamy that was created unde3r the instruction of Peter the Great. However between the years 1803 and 1819 the university had been discontinued.

In 1804, the Petersburg Pedagogical Institute was established. It became mainpedagogical Institute in 1814 and was restructured into Saint Petersburg university on February 8, 1819 by Alexander I of Russia. The university, during this time, was made up of the Faculties of Philosophy and Law; History and Philology; and Physics and Mathematics.
