San Diego State University Information
The San Diego State University is a public, space-grant university which offers a total of 151 disciplines in undergraduate and graduate degrees. It is the oldest and biggest institution in San Diego, the third among the original universities in the university system of the State of California, and considered as among the ancient universities in California.
The SDSU was originally founded as the San Diego Normal School on March 13, 1897 but was only given full university status in 1970.
Currently stirred by its president, Stephen Weber, the SDSU university aims to give a total approach to education at the highest quality for its students in the undergraduate and graduate levels and, through excellence and advances in teaching, research, and service, be able to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and offer alternatives to address existing problems. This mission that the university partakes, shall be undertaken through its comprehensive curricula in the fields of creative and performing arts, the natural and mathematical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences and the humanities.
The university was given the title, “Research University,” conferred by the Carnegie Foundation. Behind this achievement was its dynamic faculty which had steadily drawn large amount of financial aid and agreements for research and management of programs. Another milestone recorded was on June 6, 1963, when then U.S. President himself, John F. Kennedy, delivered the graduation culmination address.
Improvements were evident in the SDSU university belt in the period of 2006-2007. Additional classrooms and campus space of 200,000 square feet were acquired as three new constructions were erected, namely, the Calpulli Center the BioScience Center and the College of Arts and Letters. The university’s Department of Astronomy also owns and, together with the UIUC, operates the Mount Laguna Observatory situated in the national forest at Cleveland.
Today, the San Diego State university has eight colleges dedicated to the study of the following subjects: Business Administration; Professional Studies & Fine Arts; Engineering; Health & Human Service; Arts & Letters; Education; Extended Studies; and Science.
