Old Dominion University Information
Old Dominion University, abbreviated as ODU, is one of the three public universities in the city of Norfolk, Virginia, United States. It is known as one of the largest online distance learning course providers in the nation. Its name was derived from one of the nicknames of the state of Virginia, “The Old Dominion,” which was given by King Charles II of England.
ODU traces its beginnings to the College of William and Mary which was established in 1930. It had 206 students―125 males and 81 females―when it held its first classes in September that year. The following year, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, started to offer classes at the college, increasing the number of subject being taught. Since the school was created amidst the Great Depression, it received funding from the federal government as well as from private companies. Through various donations, the school was able to expand and be able to offer full four-year courses. In 1962, the school gained independence and was thereby renamed into Old Dominion College. With continuous expansion and the offering of graduate programs, the college became a full-fledged university in 1969, acquiring the name Old Dominion University.
Old Dominion University offers undergraduate and graduate courses through its six Colleges: Arts and Letters, Business and Public Administration, Education, Engineering and Technology, Health Sciences, Sciences and Honors College. The Honors College is a special college, accepting only students with above average academic performance. Each college is divided into several departments having their own fields of specification. Aside from its regular courses, ODU has a Distance Learning Program, which allows students, who can't go to ODU, to take classes from ODU faculty through online streaming or television.
Old Dominion University has an active athletic program, with it belonging to the first division of the NCAA. It has produced notable athletes in various sports including basketball Olympic medallist and Hall of Fame inductee Nancy Lieberman and swimming Olympic gold medallist Lashawn Merritt. Aside from athletes, ODU has also produced a number of well-known leaders in various fields such as astronaut Michael Bloomfield, US Navy Admiral William J. Fallon, Connecticut governor Jodi Rell and historian Jack Temple Kirby.
