Northern Arizona University Information
Northern Arizona University, abbreviated as NAU, is a public university in the state of Arizona, United States. Its main campus is located in Flagstaff with extended campuses spread throughout the state. The extended campuses serve as alternative learning environments where students are given the chance to learn outside the boundaries of traditional education. Classes include accelerated classes, weekend classes and night classes.
NAU was founded in 1899 as Northern Arizona Normal School. It held its first graduation in 1901, with a graduating class that included four women who were given credentials to teach in Arizonian Territory. The school was renamed to Northern Arizona State Teacher's College in 1925 when it was allowed to grant a Bachelor of Education degree by the Arizona State Legislature. Four years later, 1929, the school was again renamed, this time to Arizona State Teacher's College of Flagstaff. Although Flagstaff was greatly affected by the Great Depression, enrollment in the school continued to rise. In 1945, with the school already granting degrees other than in education as well as master's degrees, it was renamed to Arizona State College of Flagstaff. Its present name was bestowed upon in 1966 by the Arizona Board of Regents. The school's first doctoral degrees were offered in 1968.
Northern Arizona University offers undergraduate and graduate programs through its seven colleges: College of Arts & Letters, College of Engineering, Forestry & Natural Sciences, College of Education, The W. A. Franke College of Business, College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, College of Health and Human Services and Graduate College. The College of Arts & Letters is in-charge of overseeing the Ardrey Memorial Auditorium, Ashurst Hall, Northern Arizona Writing Project, Martin-Springer Institute and the NAU Art Museum. The College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences houses 11 departments, two institutes and 13 centers. It is known for producing top-quality research in the various science fields.
Notable Northern Arizona University alumni include US Navy Rear Admiral Robin Braun, actress Rutanya Alda, author Paul Genesse, Arizona Congressman Rick Renzi, novelist Jennifer Roberson, artist R.C. Gorman and actor Andy Devine, among others. The school has also produced several well-known hockey and football athletes who play in the National Hockey League and the National Football League, respectively.
