New Mexico State University Las Cruces Information
New Mexico State University, abbreviated as NMSU, is a land-grant university located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It is classified by the United States Department of Education as a Hispanic-serving institution, with 24 percent of its population composed of Hispanics. The university has been known throughout its history as a supporter of minority groups, having students coming from various minority groups. It has been ranked as among the top 50 best community colleges in the US. Aside from its Las Cruces campus, NMSU also has other campuses in Grants, Doña Ana County, Carlsbad and Alamogordo, with research and extension centers throughout New Mexico.
NMSU was established in 1888 as Las Cruces College, under the leadership of Hiram Bradley, a well-known educator originally from Indiana. In 1889, the territorial legislature of New Mexico issued a decree, commonly know as the Rodey Act of 1889, authorizing the creation of an agricultural college and agricultural experiment station within the vicinity of Las Cruces. The new institution came to be known as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The leaders of Las Cruces College opted to merge with the new school, leading to its first class opening on the 21st of January, 1890. Through continued development, the school became large enough and capable enough that the state legislature amended that the school's name be changed in 1960 to New Mexico State University.
New Mexico State University offers 87 baccalaureate degrees, 51 master's degrees and 21 doctoral programs through its various colleges: College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Social Services, College of Education, College of Business and College of Honors. Its post-baccalaureate programs are mainly offered by the Graduate School. Most of its doctoral degrees are limited to agriculture, the sciences, engineering and education.
For research and other advanced studies, NMSU houses several research institutes and research centers: Agricultural Experiment Station, Bureau for Business Research and Services, Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, Institute for Energy and Environment, Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Center, Physical Science Laboratory and Water Resources Research Institute.
Some of the university's notable alumni include basketball Olympian Chito Reyes, actor Scott Bailey and Yemeni Agriculture Minister Nasser al-Aulaqi.
