National Yang Ming University Information
The National Yang Ming University, abbreviated as NYMU, is one of the leading universities in Taiwan. It is renowned for its excellence in the fields of Biotechnology, Life Sciences and Medicine. QS Asian Universities Rankings placed NYMU as fourth overall in Taiwan and second in Life Science and Biomedicine. The university is located at Shipai, Beitou District in Taipei.
NYMU was established in 1974 as the National Yang-Ming College of Medicine, with the aim of producing top-notch medical professionals as well as biomedical scientists. Its university status was granted in 1994, becoming the first Taiwanese university dedicated to education and research in biomedicine. The university has grown dramatically since its founding, now having six schools and 15 research centers. Also, it is now affiliated with the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, which serves as its medical and paramedical students' teaching hospital.
NYMU's schools include the School of Medicine, School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, School of Life Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry and School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Another institution in the university is the Center for General Education, which allows students to practice what they have learned in real life situations. Its research centers specialize in the fields of Genomic Medicine, Bioinformatics, Neurology, Medical Engineering, Biophotonics, Pharmaceutical Science, Infectious Disease and Immunology, Drug Discovery and the Brain. The university also has an international program designed to train students who are interested in international health issues. The program targets both local and international students and promotes experience sharing among them.
The university is in partnership with over 30 universities in other countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Japan, Finland, Mongolia, France, Italy and Papua New Guinea.
Aside from its teaching and medical facilities, National Yang Ming University provides its students with sports and recreational facilities. The university houses a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a hillside stadium, a hilltop stadium and a surface stadium. Each of the aforementioned facilities are subdivided into different areas allotted for specific types of sports. There are also 57 university houses which accommodate both foreign and local students. Included in these houses are dormitories for both males and females.
