Nagasaki University Information

The Nagasaki University, known as Chōdai in Japan, it is a national university holding its main campus at Bunkyo-machi which is in Nagasaki City. It engulfs two other perimeters, namely, the Sakamoto Campus and the Katafuchi Campus.

Nagasaki University has its origin as a Medical Training Institute in November 12, 1857 established by the office outlet of Tokugawa Shogunate. It was one of the first westernized medical institutions in Japan with J. L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort, a Dutch naval surgeon, as its first professor.

The hospital was first established in 1861 and in the post Meiji Restoration era, the school was made into a public institution. In 1901, it became the Nagasaki Vocational School of Medicine and in 1923, it was renamed as the Nagasaki Medical College. It was severely ruined by the A-bomb on the 9th of in 1945, being situated only about half a km from the bombs hypocenter. On that fateful day, 800 lives of its students, faculty, and medical staff perished. In September 1945, the school was transferred to Omura, it moved again in 1946 to Isahaya. In 1949, due to the amalgamation of several national colleges namely, Nagasaki Medical College (including College Hospital and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences), Nagasaki College of Economics, Nagasaki Normal School, Nagasaki Youth Normal School and Nagasaki High School, a new Nagasaki University was born.

Today, Nagasaki University has eight faculties spread in its three campuses. At Bunkyo grounds, six of the eight faculties are located, namely, Education, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, and Fisheries. The Schools of Medicine and Dentistry are housed in the Sakamoto Campus while the Faculty of Economics is accommodated at Katafuchi Campus.

Six graduate schools are currently available at Nagasaki University, these are devoted to the study of Economics; Education; International Health Development ; Science and Technology; and Biomedical subjects.

Nagasaki University also owns two active research institutions, namely the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute and the Institute of Tropical Medicine.

Included in its alumni roster are the following notable personalities in Japan:
Takashi Nagai - an Atomic bomb victim, a doctor with specialization in radiology; and
Osamu Shimomura – a marine biologist and organic chemist, a shared recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in for his notable contribution to the discovery of GFP (green fluorescent protein). The university’s current President is Hiroshi Saito.
