Memorial University of Newfoundland Information

The Memorial University of Newfoundland, also called MUN or Memorial University, is one of Canada's top comprehensive universities with a concentration in medicine, geology, business and engineering. Currently, the university is known as Atlantic Canada's largest university, with its students spread out over four campuses. It was founded in 1925 under the name Memorial University College, and became an autonomous university in 1949.

It opened its doors t enrollees in September 1925 under its first president J.L. Paton with only 57 students. It merged with its neighboring Normal School in 1933 and took over the responsibility of training teachers. The university was built to commemorate to the residents of Newfoundland who died during the World War. Later on, the university also stood as a symbol to honour the people who died during World War II.

Its was established as a university in August 1949 through the Memorial University Act. During its first year as a university, it had 307 enrollees. Through the years, the number of students increased and the university moved from its Parade Street address to its Elizabeth Avenue address, which is its current location. Its Faculty of Medicine was founded in1967 and formally opened in 1969. In the same year, it opened its Harlow campus, which offers internships in Education and a number of course work.

To date, the university has five campuses: the main campus (which also houses the Marine Institute), St. John's campus, the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, and the Harlow campus. It offers several undergraduate and graduate programs through its different faculties and schools. Its faculties include the Faculty of Business, Arts, Engineering, Education, Science and Medicine. It also has schools in Graduate Studies, Nursing, Music, Human Kinetics, Recreation and Social Work, and Pharmacy. Popular disciplines in the university are Business Administration, Engineering, Education, Nursing, History, Folklore, Psychology, French and Biochemistry.
