Guide to growing Pearl grass - Melica
There are two main types of Melica that are grown in the garden; Pearl grass and Melic.
The genus itself contains many other grasses and ranges from 30 to 60cm in height.
Melica species usually flower in the summer with silky inflorescences.
How to grow Pearl Grass
It is best to sow pearl grass outdoors; sow about 25cm apart at the beginning of spring; lightly cover the seeds. It will take about three weeks to germinate the pearl grass seeds once the temperature has reached about 15 to 20 degrees Centigrade. Pearl Grass can grow in either sunny or partially shaded parts of the garden and likes to have a moist soil.
Caring for pearl grass - Melica plants
Once established cut the Pearl grass (and other Melica species) back in the spring to encourage vigorous thick growth. It is important to keep the soil moist so water regularly. If you require more plants then Pearl grass can be divided in the spring.
