Originally Innsbruck university had a Faculty of Medicine; however, in 2004, it was established as a separate university under the named Innsbruck Medical University.
The university is split into two major sections: the Theoretical departments, and the University medical centre. Departments within the theoretical departments include the Innsbruck Biocentre; Department of Physiology and Medical Physics; Department of Medical Genetics, Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology; Department of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology; Department of Hygiene, Microbiology, and Social Medicine; and the Department of Medical Statistics, Informatics and Health Economics. The Medical centre has umpteen departments dedicated to medical genres such as Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery; Internal Medicine; Diagnostic Radiology; and Dentistry.
