Georgia Health Sciences University Information
Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is the former name of Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU), one of the four research universities affiliated with the University System of Georgia. It is a public academic health center composed of five undergraduate and graduate colleges.
The university's main campus is located in Augusta, Georgia, encompassing more than 40 hectares. The Medical College of Georgia has clinical campuses in other Georgian cities, including Savannah, Rome and Albany, as well as a partnership campus in Athens, Georgia.
The Georgia Health Sciences University was chartered in 1828 as the Medical Academy of Georgia. It opened on the first of October, 1829 at the Augusta Hospital. The school's name was renamed to the Medical Institute of Georgia in December of the same year with the mandate of the General Assembly of Georgia. In December 1833, the school was again renamed, this time to the Medical College of Georgia, for which it would be known until January of 2011. The university started to offer postgraduate programs in the 1960s upon the request of its then-chairman. This move became one of the largest expansion projects in the history of the university as it entailed the establishment of the Schools of Dentistry, Graduate Studies and Allied Health Science. The three schools opened before the start of 1970.
The university's five colleges and schools include the College of Allied Health Sciences, College of Dental Medicine, College of Graduate Studies, the Medical College of Georgia and the College of Nursing. The College of Dental Medicine held its first graduation rites in 1973 and is, until now, the only dental school in Pennsylvania. The College of Graduate Studies offers various doctorate and master's degrees. It is considered one of the most prestigious health sciences centers in the United States. The Medical College of Georgia holds one of the most advanced medical research facilities in the world with several institutes specializing in various medical disciplines.
Notable GHSU graduates include Dr. Charles Iverson Bryans Jr., who pioneered the use of hypnotherapy as a means of helping traumatized soldiers return to battle; Dr. Robert G. Ellison Sr., who performed the first open-heart surgery in Georgia; and several other doctors in various fields of medicine.
