Leipzig University Information

The university of Leipzig is located in the German state of Saxony. It was established in the early 15th century putting it amongst the oldest universities in the world. Today the university offers study across 14 different faculties; of these the medical faculty is one of the most prestigious in Europe. Leipzig university offers study in for around 190 fields. It is currently governed by its rector Franz Häuser. Although most courses are of course taught in German, the institution offers many courses that are taught in English; this makes it an ideal university to consider if you are a foreign student who would love to study in Germany, but is not to strong in the language.

The 14 faculty of the university of Leipzig offers study across the following broad areas: Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology; Chemistry and Mineralogy; Economics and Management; Education; History, Art and Oriental Studies; Law; Mathematics and Computer Science; Medicine; Philology; Physics and Earth Science; Social Sciences and Philosophy; Sports Science; Theology; and Veterinary Medicine.

Over the years the university of Leipzig has knocked up an enviable alumni list including the nobel prize winners Gustav Hertz and Werner Heisenberg (both for physics). Other notable people include the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel; philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche and Gotthold Lessing; and the psychologist Wilhelm Wundt.
