Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology Information (KAIST)

KAIST is a government-run academic institution which is the country’s first and most prominent research-based science and engineering establishment. It is placed 69th in the overall ranking and 21st place worldwide in technology and information technology subjects in 2009 by the QS-The Times World University Rankings.

It was confirmed by the ABET evaluation as having a graduate course within 10% of the top US college level in 1992; and identified by Chosun Ilbo evaluation of Asian colleges as number one in the nation in 2009, and ranked 7th in Asia.

The school was founded in February 16, 1971 through a special directive and named as Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS), establishing its premises at Hongneung Campus, Seoul.

Since then, the university had grown considerably and identified the following milestones:

· Merger of KIST and the Institution of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) took place in December 31, 1980

· Founding of Korea Institute of Technology, 31/12/84

· First opening ceremony for Korea Institute of Technology, March 3, 1986

· Separation of KIST from KAIST 12/6/89 · United with Korea Institute of Technology and the creation of the Daedok campus, 4/7/89

· Institution of Korea Institute of Advanced Study (KIAS), 1/10/96

· Foundation of the National Nanofab Center (NNFC) 4/5/05

· Changing of its name to KAIST only, thus cancelling its spelled-out name, 1/108

· The merger of Information and Communications University (ICU) with KAIST thus instituting the KAIST Information Technology Convergence Campus, 1/3/09

KAIST Korea was originally established through government aid and manned by Korean engineering and science professionals trained in the United States. The school’s thrust is focused on theoretical and applied research, being considered the country’s main pillar in Research and Development projects. KAIST is steered by its current officials, namely, Nam Pyo Suh, School President; Soon-Heung Chang, serving as Provost; and Ji-won Yang, Vice President for external affairs.
