Indian Institute of Science Information

The Indian Institute of science is a research institute that caters for post graduate study. It offers two major forms of degrees, those that are taught (mainly masters programs) and those that are achieved through research (both master and doctoral programs). In all there are 48 different disciplines that can be carried out at the institute. The indian institute of Science (also known as IISc) grants about 250 research degrees pe3r annum, making it one of the largest postgraduate degree giving institutions in India. As one of India's most prestigious research institutions the IISc Bangalore is very difficult to get into; it only accepts candidates from the top 1% of all students.

The IISc has two major faculties, one rededicated to science and the other to Engineering. Each of these faculties is fairly autonomous within the institution having their own Deans. The faculty of science is subdivided into three major departments:Biology; Chemistry; Maths and Physics (combined). The faculty of Engineering at the IISc has two major departments, one dedicated to Electrical science, the other dedicated to mechanics. In all there are 48 departments at the IISc, many dedicated to specialised fields such as those related to the aerospace industry and bioinformatics.

Over the years many distinguished scholars have passed through the gates of the Indian Institute of Science these include the governor of Goa Satish Chandran; the bio mechanic V Modi; aerospace researcher Satya Atluri; biochemist G Ramachandran; and the physicist Harish Chandra.
