Drexel University Information

Drexel University is a coeducational private university established in 1891 under the name Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. It was founded by Philadelphia philanthropist and financier A.J. Drexel to give men and women from all walks of life more opportunities to receive education in sciences and practical arts.

In 1936, the university changed its name to the Drexel Institute of Technology and was allowed full university status in 1970. Drexel merged with MCP Hahnemann University on the 1st of July, 2002 to create the university's College of Medicine. In the third quarter of 2006, the university opened a School of Law.

It's school of Law was renamed after Earle I. Mack, a Drexel alumni. Together with the Earle Mach School of Law, the university has three other schools: these are devoted to Education; Public Health, and to Biomedical Engineering, Science & Health Systems.

The university is also divided into nine colleges; these cover study in the following areas: Information Science and Technology; Professional Studies; Medicine; Engineering; Arts and Sciences; Media Arts and Design; Business; Nursing and Health Professions; and there is an honours college. Its Engineering college is widely popular in America due to its Appropriate Technology course.

Aside from its regular undergraduate offerings, it also offers graduate studies via the Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies, which formally opened in 2008. Postgraduate degrees are available in disciplines of Engineering, Business Administration, Higher Education, Information Systems and Management.

The university also began offering online learning programs since 1996. Drexel Online caters to working adults and offers a wide variety of degrees in postgraduate and undergraduate studies, such as masters degrees in Business Administration and Nursing.
