The College of William and Mary in Virginia, also called The College of William and Mary, William and Mary, The College, and W&M, is a research university founded in 1693. The college is considered the second-oldest academic institution in terms of higher education in the US. The Phi Beta Kappa, the premier Greek-letter organization, was founded at the college in 1776.
It foundation in 1693 was under the impetus of Virginia Colony leaders who wanted an institution for higher education which will cater to young men not only from the Colony, but also from Native American descent. A Royal charter enacted on the 8th of February 1693 established the college, whose name was derived from Queen Mary II and King William III, the reigning monarchs during that time.
In line with the Royal Charter's stipulations, the college had three schools which taught Philosophy, Divinity, Languages as well as arts and sciences. The main focus of the college was Philosophy, which taught young men the components of moral philosophy e.g, rhetoric, ethics and logic, as well as components of natural philosophy e.g. metaphysics, mathematics and physics. After graduating from the Philosophy School, young men may enter the Divinity School in preparation for their ordination as members of the Church of England.
The college's faculties include its Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Aside from its main campus, it is affiliated with the Royal Hospital School, its sister institution. The college also offers postgraduate studies through W&M Law, Mason School of Business, and several other doctoral graduate programs.
