Bielefeld University – Uniting Teaching and Research

Bielefeld University is one of the youngest German universities promoting a new original style of organization based on the principle of re-establishing the unity between research and teaching. Founded in 1969, the University claims itself to be “a new type” university focusing on interdisciplinary research supported by all-in-one university building enclosing all 13 faculties along with research facilities.

Bielefeld University offers its students (20,000 in average) a wide range of subjects and degrees to choose from. It is divided into 13 main faculties, each with a number of departments. The list of faculties is as follows:

The Faculty of Sociology, the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Pedagogy at Bielefeld University have gained special recognition not only in Germany, but across Europe as well. The University tends to add new courses and supplementary programs keeping up with social and scientific developments.

Apart from Bachelor’s Master’s and Doctor’s degree programs, the University offers the Diploma degree, the State Examination for Teachers degree, the State Examination in Legal Studies degree as well as a few more, including their unique Promotion degree, which allows reaching the doctoral level faster.

Bielefeld University Facilities

Bielefeld University stresses the role of research and is home to more than 20 research institutes and centers. The Center for Interdisciplinary Research is the main research facility welcoming scholars from all over the world to come and work on interdisciplinary subjects and in research and working groups.

The university building is a massive construction embracing not only all the lecture halls, multi-media classrooms, a huge library, and an impressive number of research facilities, but also the inner-university market place and a vibrant meeting site. There is a swimming pool, a sports gym, tennis courts and football fields providing excellent recreational opportunities for all students. The Teutoburg Forest is also located in the immediate vicinity.

Bielefeld University encourages foreign students to enroll into its programs and courses, and runs a number of facilities oriented on students from abroad. These include halls of residence (room, apartments and flats) and youth hostels, which can be applied for by all international students.
